Christopher Boots
Christopher Boots is an Australian design studio based in Melbourne, founded in 2011 around the principle Fiat Lux – let there be light. Working at the intersection of light, art and architecture, the studio creates lighting objects informed by natural structures, geology and timeless symbolism.
Founder Christopher Boots studied literature and linguistics before turning to industrial design. This path into form – shaped by narrative and tactility – continues to inform the studio’s work today. Inspired by crystalline structures, particularly quartz, natural systems are translated into lighting with a strong spatial and sensory presence.
Material, light and continuity
Christopher Boots Studio works with a deep respect for the history and potential of materials. Each project is grounded in research into traditional techniques and materials, which are reinterpreted through a contemporary lens. Natural stone, glass, bronze and metal are shaped with precision and a strong understanding of proportion, geometry and balance.
All pieces are designed, developed and handcrafted by a team of skilled artisans in Melbourne. The process reflects a lineage of making, where knowledge is passed from hand to hand. Collaborations with glassblowers, bronze foundries, stonemasons and metalsmiths form an essential part of the production, maintaining a continuity of craft.
A process shaped by dialogue
Each project is developed through a close and considered process, shaped by context, collaboration and material understanding. No two pieces are identical in their development, as each responds to a specific architectural setting and intention. The work extends beyond immediate use, engaging with light, form and material over time.
The studio’s work is represented in international exhibitions and collections, and has been shown at institutions and galleries including Hermès, Rossana Orlandi, Cassina and the National Gallery of Victoria, with commissions for Cartier worldwide.
